Tony Iams, senior analyst with research firm Ideas International Inc., said virtualization “weakens the importance of OSs for managing hardware,” which is a major development because “you can potentially get greater flexibility for managing workloads. In a way, that makes the OS no longer quite as important.”

In your opinion, which of the two primary forces mentioned in that article–managing ever increasingly powerful hardware or distributing software via virtual appliances–is acting more powerfully to diminish the importance of the OS? I have my opinion, but I’m curious to see what you think.
I think it’s more the increasing power of hardware. That’s the enabler that allows us to build virtual appliances. That will just increase over the next few years as some of the current virtualization weaknesses continue to be addressed by added support in the hardware.
