The Tribox asterisk virtual appliance is intended to make it easy to get an Asterisk Voice over IP (VOIP) PBX up and running. Compared to the typical virtual appliance, getting this one running is a bit of work, but compared to what it would take to install all the included components from scratch it’s a piece of cake. That’s what these things are all about, inside the appliance you can have the hariest ball of bailing wire and duct tape holding things together, but to the user it doesn’t matter, it’s just an application. The difficulty with the Trixbox appliance primarily comes from the requirement to integrate with some third party devices (like phones) and telephony service providers. It’s not a small download at 658MB, but might be worth checking out if you’re a technically savvy small business or IT consultant who provides services to small businesses.
I’m currently evaluating this appliance to see if we can make use of it internally to help sort out the sad state of our current telecom infrastructure. We’re a small company so having a few VOIP lines would be sufficient for our needs. For the time being we’re scraping by with cell phones and Skype which is considerably less than ideal.
