Ingres Releases Icebreaker Database Software Appliance

Ingres Corporation has released a software/virtual appliance that bundles their relational database server with rPath Linux to make deployment much simpler.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ — Ingres Corporation, the leading business open source database company, today announced the general availability of Ingres Icebreaker(TM), the first fully integrated enterprise-class database and operating system that dramatically lowers the cost and complexity of system maintenance and support. Ingres Icebreaker is designed to be a self-contained software stack, integrating the proven enterprise strength of Ingres 2006 with only those Linux operating system components required to support the Ingres platform.

Ingres Icebreaker represents open source innovation at its best. Collaborating with rPath, provider of the first platform for creating and maintaining virtual and software appliances, Ingres first introduced the proof of concept with the goal of providing users with a single, easy-to-manage environment in which the operating system becomes transparent and support is provided by one point of contact and unified maintenance stream. Just six months after introducing the concept, a dozen customers and partners have participated in the beta program providing positive feedback on the ease of use, ease of integration and simplicity of installation, configuration and maintenance.

Ingres is the first database vendor to release an official virtual appliance, but Virtual Appliances.net provides very nice virtual appliances for MySQL and PostgreSQL
