Server Virtualization Goes Prime Time

ServerWatch has published an article Server Virtualization Goes Prime Time that looks at the rapid growth that’s being seen in virtualization usage.

Research firm IDC estimates about 750,000 virtual servers were in operation in 2004, and it expects this to rise to more than 5 million by 2009 — a compound annual growth rate of almost 50 percent.

With that data from 2004 and the growth of roughly 50% for the last two years that means we should be up to 1.7 million virtual servers now. For some reason that number seems low to me, but growth is definitely rapid.
