Another ServerWatch article, “Virtually Speaking: The Not-So-Humble Hypervisor”. Of particular interest is the claim by Gartner analyst Brian Gammage that most PCs will ship with virtualization support by the end of 2007.
The pervasiveness of virtualization will not be limited to servers. Gartner analyst Brian Gammage noted in a statement, “Virtualization support is now being embedded into PCs. By the end of 2007, most of the PCs sold will come with this capability. The launch of hardware virtualization support marked the start of a period that will inevitably lead to the establishment of a critical new PC standard: the hypervisor.”
I suspect what he’s really referring to is that the chips included in the PCs will have hardware virtualization instructions. I can see that will be true given Intel’s and AMD’s roadmaps, but it seems pretty unlikely that a hypervisor will be a standard feature in that time frame.
