VMWare has updated the VMWare virtual appliances directory to become the VMWare Virtual Appliances Marketplace. The goal with this is to allow companies to sell virtual appliances with VMWare’s site acting as the middleman. Right now though this really just looks like a pretty minor makeover of the site. They’ve added VMWare certified virtual appliance badges to a few of the appliances and you can click through to the appliance vendors site to download, and in some cases buy appliances, but VMWare it self doesn’t seem to be handling the transactions. At VMWorld on Monday I heard this described as kind of like the iTunes for virtual appliances which would be cool, but it’s along way from that (if that even makes sense). Not a bad thing, but definitely more of a baby step than I was expecting to see. It’s early days still though, so hopefully in the next few months it will evolve a bit more to become a true marketplace.
