Amazon introduces the virtual appliance concept to EC2

Amazon has added the ability to release publicly available virtual machines for the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) grid computing service. Prior to this there were only a few Amazon created machines available, now others can easily share virtual machines created for the service and third parties can start creating virtual appliances that target the service.

At JumpBox we’ve been looking closely at the EC2 service for use in various capacities and this new ability is quite interesting. Once the service gets out of beta there should be some very cool applications emerging that take advantage of the instant infrastructure that Amazon EC2 provides.
